The National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP), published in the USA in 2001, outlines 11 goals and 68 objectives that include: increasing public awareness, creating a research agenda, improving mental health services and much more.This strategy applies a public health approach and has resulted in significant momentum nationally.One of the key objectives of this national strategy is the establishment of a coordinating body to oversee its efforts.This presentation will focus on the achievement of a major milestone: the launch of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention-a public-private partnership designed to leverage influence high level systems to implement the objectives of the National Strategy.This presentation will outline the progress we have made over the last ten years.Presenters Dr.Jerry Reed, Director for the national Suicide Prevention Resource Centre, and Dr.Sally Spencer-Thomas, Executive Secretary for the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention will share their perspectives on this national initiative.
