Background: A previous suicide attempt is a potent risk factor for suicide later on.Care for suicide attempters is one of the primary tasks in suicide prevention.Methods: In Japan, The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW) planned several measures for suicide attempters, and launched the training workshop for emergency medical staffs in 2008.Suicide prevention research groups in both Yokohama City University and Iwate Medical University had developed a training program including some key lectures and workshops for it.Since 2009, The Japanese Society for Emergency Medicine and The Japanese Association for Emergency Psychiatry have collaborated for this workshop.Both academic societies have made the care guidelines for suicide attempters, respectively, in accordance with their commitment.Progress and discussion: In 2010, the training workshop was held four times at the major cities in Japan.More than 350 emergency medical staffs and community primary health care staffs have participated in the workshop for the present.The MHLW continues measures for suicide attempters, and The Japanese Society for Emergency Medicine will launch another basic training workshop on care for mental health problem at emergency units.Active commitment of two academic societies and their cooperation is expected to improve care for suicide attempters at medical facilities and community mental health.
