Electro-active elastomers which can change their mechanical behaivor in response tothe application of electric fields are progressively emerging as one of the bestactuators. When subject to an electric field, failure in the electro-active elastomersmay occur by virtue of the electromechanical instability. Based on the previous workand perturbation method, the electromechanical instability in the electro-activeelastomers is discussed in this paper. The results obtained show that the true electricdisplacement and nominal electric displacement have similar stabilizing andunstabilizing effects for half plane.
