The Suicide Prevention Program (SPP) of the Community Mental Health Centres (CMHC) started at the end of 1997 with a contract between the Flemish government, the CMHC and their umbrella organisations. The mission is to professionally develop, coordinate and implement suicide prevention with a long term perspective within the CMHC as well as in collaboration with other relevant organizations. The suicide prevention team consists of 8.5 FTE Suicide Prevention Officers (15 part-time in the 20 CMHC), a part-time Coordinator en 0,3 secretariat. The paper presents the most important achievements related to the three goals: 1) to optimise the care offered to mental health centres clients at risk, to support the bereaved by suicide, and to develop chains of care for suicide attempters, 2) to provide training and support regarding suicide prevention/postvention to other professional caregivers and their networks (e.g., the Suicide Prevention Officers trained >3.600 professional caregivers in the year 2010), 3) to establish collaborative alliances with other relevant actors. In addition, the paper presents the embedding of the Suicide Prevention Program in the governmental Suicide Prevention Action Plan.
