1994年的枫红时节,也恰是开国庆典四十五周年之日,湖北江陵举办了第三届湖北省根艺评比展览,为期十天。这次的评比展览,有人评说是一次贵在参予的根艺盛会。全省除十八个参展团外,还有一个县的个体根艺制作者赶来参加。参展作品多达一千三百件,目览作品,件件都有特色,展现了百花齐放的势态,赢得了“件件都好”的赞誉。经过群众性的品评、比较,从严选出金奖三十件、银奖五十件、铜奖七十件,其佳作也有数百件,展现了百家争鸣之势,赢得了“立于美学观点,评比无私,众皆满意”的共识结果。据有些专家认为,这次评比展,是高水平的,体现了面向二十一世纪发展的新境界,所放射的光彩,正是根雕艺术对国庆大典的添辉,是根艺新发展的转机点。奇妙的成就,展现出根艺潜在的艺术活力。这次评比展,组委会起了决定性的指导、组织作用。其管理运作严密,所订各项准则正确,调动了一切积极活力,排除了可能出现的干扰,坚持民主评比、择优入选、众皆满意的原则,做到了花钱少,效果好。所属评委会,开创了民主比较、公正无私、择优选精的格局。强化美学观点,争鸣中取得共识,有严有宽;比较中修改作品,提高品位。等级奖由各展团推荐,集中比较;为防止精品遗漏,又复查挑选。在经过上下结合,反复比较评定后,又召开了根艺商品化和根艺美学研讨会,对互通信息、根艺美学观念的认识,都起到实际的有益作用。既提高了鉴赏力,又提高了艺术创作力,奠定了实践与理论相结合的评比基础。
