The human genome project has allowed for rapid expansion in the search for and characterisation of new genetic markers important in the susceptibility to cancer and their subsequent assessment of clinical and epidemiological relevance.Previous studies in these areas have been limited by relatively small sample sizes and lack of subsequent replication. The more recent studies are now employing much larger sample sizes based on collaborative arrangements between the many existing study sample collections. As such this strategy offers an important rapid way forward to more quickly identify important new leads and their subsequent characterisation. One such example consortium is that of PRACTICAL which is based on investigations in prostate cancer.
