  Sea ice controls light availability to phytoplankton,and acts as a seasonal reservoir for iron.In the spring,ice melt releases iron in the water column which can stimulate phytoplankton growth,thus playing an important role in the marine carbon cycle.We examined the relationship between spring blooms in chlorophyll a concentration and sea ice area in the Sea of Okhotsk during the period of 2005~2009.The spring bloom in chlorophyll a concentration occurs when approximately 88%of sea ice has melted,reaching a maximum around June.A larger sea winter ice area correlates well with a higher chlorophyll a concentration in the first bloom,albeit its delayed occurrence,but corresponds to a lower annual average concentration.Given its role in regulating the primary productivity of the surface water,the impact of the sea ice change on carbon cycle in the marginal seas must not be underestimated.
