Herb Epimedii (Yinyanghuo in Chinese), one of the most frequently used tonic herbs, were prescribed in Traditional Chinese Medicine for treatment of osteoporosis, delay ageing and improvement of sexual function in China.Among its bioactive components, a trace component of icaritin showed a prominent inhibition ability on osteoclast, hypoxia-inducible factor-1 α in human osteosarcoma cells and proliferation on osteoplast.Though possessing outstanding activity, the research about icaritin is relatively insufficient due to lack of this trace component.Herein a non-selective hydrolysis method was established to obtain icaritin from Epimedium.
