　　Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women of Western countries today.It is estimated that there are over 182,460 new cases and 40,480 deaths due to breast cancer in American women in 2008.Metastasis, the spread of the primary tumors to distant organs, is the major cause of death in breast cancer patients.It is, therefore, important to block the key step of metastasis, such as tumor angiogenesis, in order to effectively treat breast cancer.Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a pivotal role in tumor angiogenesis.Because the degree of tumor malignancy directly correlates with the expression of VEGF, but inversely correlates with the expression of tumor suppressor gene p16, we examined whether the restoration of p 16 in breast cancer cells would modulate VEGF expression.
