Apoptosis is an obligatory event in early wheat ontogenesis.It is characterized by cytoplasmic structural reorganization and fragmentation,in particular,with the appearance in vacuoles of specific vesicles containing intact organelles (mitochondria/plastids),active synthesis of H-mtDNA,chromatin condensation and margination in the nucleus,intemucleosomal fragmentation of nuclear DNA,Ca2+induced high amplitude mitochondrial swelling and cytochrome c release from mitochondria.The earliest signs of programmed cell death are observed in the cytoplasm,and the elements of apoptotic degradation in the nucleus appear later.Apoptosis is efficiently modulated by anti and prooxidants.
