Recently,we identified Lipid phosphate phosphatase-3 (LPP3) in a functional assay of angiogenesis.Structurally,the LPP3 protein is a type 2 plasma-membrane bound lipid phosphatase enzyme.Functionally,LPP3 is known to degrade sphingosine-1-phosphate (S 1 P) and lysophosphatidic acid phosphate (LPA) as well as can act as a cell associated integrin ligand.1 In contrast to the Lpp 1 and Lpp2 genes,whose functional activities are dispensable for embryonic life,Lpp3 null embryos show severe embryonic developmental defects,such as defective formation of the chorioallantois,placenta,yolk sac vasculature,and shortened anterior-posterior axis and duplication of the axial structures.
