  The aerospace industry is facing the challenges of environmental demands,reduced operation cost and improved performance.This has resulted in increased uses of advanced joining technologies and coating technologies for improving the performance and functionality of the materials.Power beam welding technologies have been widely used for fabrication of airframe and engine structures.In addition,composites are increasingly being used.Surface protection (thermal and mechanical) of composites with functional coatings becomes a key factor for protecting the composite parts from thermal and mechanical damages.TWI have been supporting aerospace members for many years and pioneered a number of technologies in power beam processing,friction welding and surface coating for aerospace applications.The latest welding and coating technologies for aerospace applications developed at TWI are introduced.The characteristics of different technologies and potential applications are discussed.
