An improved synthesis and mechanism study of magnetic Fe3O4@PGMA microspheres

  Magnetic polyglycidyl methacrylate (Fe3O4@PGMA) microspheres have potential to build the sensitive elements of bead array and are suitable for biological application due to their surface hydrophilicity,biocompatibility and nonspecific adsorption.In previous work,magnetic microspheres were usually prepared using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) that were made by coprecipitation.But those MNPs cannot disperse uniformly in reaction system during synthesizing microspheres.Here we present an improved method to synthesize monodisperse superparamagnetic polymer microspheres using alcohol soluble Fe3O4 nanoparticles by dispersion polymerization.Instead of precipitation,the alcohol soluble Fe3O4 nanoparticles were obtained by reducing FeCl3 in polyols in the presence of sodium acetate [1].Using the improved method,the bulk of Fe3O4@PGMA microspheres were easily synthesized by one-pot with smooth and compact surfaces and had an average diameter of 3.5μm with excellent monodispersity (PDI 1.17),as shown in Fig.1.Further,the mechanism of synthesis is discussed (Fig.2).
