Background Poor insight and denial of illness are common features of schizophrenia.If lack of insight is driven by culturally sensitive denial it may be relatively more prominent,as compared to other symptoms,in patients from cultures with a high level of stigma towards mental illness.It has been suggested that in Chinese culture psychotic mental illness represents a severe,culturally driven,loss of"face" for both the individual and their families.
