The mercury signature of anthropogenic and natural events recorded in 300-years ice core from a Belu

  Environmental archive such as ice core is a long time scale record of Hg concentrations reflected regional features of Hg emission and past contributions of natural and anthropogenic sources to the global atmospheric Hg contamination.Our high-resolution record of Hg concentrations in the ice core from a Belukha glacier presented the history of atmospheric Hg emission in the Siberian Altai for the period 1680-2001.Total Hg concentrations in an ice and firn samples from the Belukha glacier were determined by CVAFS on a mercury analyzer “Mercur”(Analytik Jena)according to US EPA Method 1631.The detection limit 0.025 ng L-1 was due to optimization of instrumental parameters and contamination-free methodology of field and analytical work.Hg concentration profile reflects both prolongated impact of Hg emission and short-time events.One of the highest Hg concentration peak is attributed to the Krakatau eruption.Individual remote anthropogenic events are also reflected in the ice core record and confirmed by trajectory analysis(model HYSPLIT).Hg concentrations in pre-industrial time are comparable with the values reported for the Alps and remote areas(Greenland,Antarctic).Calculated decadal average values determined the long term trend correlated mostly with the history of the world and USSR Hg production.Being constant and low in pre-industrial times Hg record in intermediate time reflects the global Hg emission due to growth of world Hg production and local emissions from mining and metallurgical processing in the Altai region.Increasing of Hg concentration after 1940 we assume is linked to growth of world Hg mined,starting of work of Khaidarkan Mercury Plant(KMP)located in Kyrgyzstan,development of industry(in Kazakhstan and Siberia,particularly)and emission from coal combustion.The influence from Aktash Hg plant(local source)is insignificant.Peak Hg concentrations in the 1970s is conforms to other environmental archives.Sharp decreasing in 1980s we assume mainly caused by the economic crisis of the USSR and further primary mercury mining collapsed in the 1990s.Increasing of Hg concentrations in the Belukha ice core in last decade differed from other environmental archives and we attribute this to increasing Hg emission from Asia and impact from KMP activities.
