A number of studies have suggested an unexpected diversity among the Actinobacteria at a variety of Antarctic locations (Table 1).These biodiodiversity assessments were made using a combination of direct culture, clone library construction and analysis and DGGE followed by band extraction and sequencing. The Antarctic environments studied so far include aerial, terrestrial (including omithigenic),freshwater and marine.A bipolar comparison was also made for a range of freshwater environments. These observations can be now be confirmed with data from metagenomic library construction and analysis, including both GS-FLX titanium sequencing and activity screening.
