Brassica juncea(AjAjBjBj)is an important oilseed crop in the world.Given that a lower seed yield and the absence of heterosis application in the species limit its production, creating a population of B.juncea with a renewed genome might substantially address these deficiencies.Interspecific crosses between traditional B.juncea and allohexaploid, which were previously generated from crosses between B.rapa(ArAr)and B.carinata(BcBcCcCc),were followed by cytological screening and intensive pedigree selection for three generations.Relatively large plant numbers were maintained in each generation to ensure polymorphism.A population of new-type B.juncea with the correct chromosome number and desired constitution was generated; this involved multiple F2 families and founder parents. The population had good fertility, with improved rates of seed setting confirmed across multiple generations.Half of the genome of new-type B.juncea had been shuffled by massive allelic replacement from the Ar and Bc subgenomes and a considerable degree of novel variation.Hybrids of new-type/traditional B.juncea demonstrated strong heterosis for seed yield. The population reported here broadens the genetic base of B.juncea, will be valuable for sustainable hybrid breeding.
