Shape Memory Effect of PEG Hydrogels in Lyophilization

  Shape memory polymers materials that can be deformed and fixed into temporary shapes,which can recover to the original,permanent shape upon proper external stimulus.Such property endues them with a variety of applications from aerospace technologies to intelligent medical devices.However,traditional programming methods in a shape memory circle are limited in singe axial and biaxial stretching.Here we propose a novel way to fix temporary shapes through lyophilization of PEG hydrogels those provide melting temperature around 50 ℃ at the dry state.The freeze-dried materials showed macroporous structure,and after heating,the materials shrunk on all the three dimensions achieving a non-porous structure.These non-porous shrunken materials can swell in water to form PEG hydrogels again.Therefore,the lyophilization procedure can be recognized as a triaxial stretching programming method which can be repeatedly performed.Effect of feed compositions and freezing conditions on the pore structure was studied.In addition,a pore-structure-memory effect was also discovered,showing that the freezing operation for the first time of the hydrogels will be recorded and memorized.
