Responsive hydrogels can actively change their shapes in response to external stimuli.While shape changing process of hydrogels is commonly gradual,there are some intriguing examples of sudden shape changing in the natural world,e.g.Venus flytrap and Nepenthes mirabilis.When a flytrap catches bugs,two blades first slowly approach to each other followed by a sudden closure in order to avoid escaping of the bugs.Inspired by such processes,a bi-stable structure was built using responsive hydrogel blocks which were assembled through supramolecular “glue”.At an initial stage,shape changing upon stimulation of the structure was slow and unobvious.However a large and sudden shape shifting could be achieved from one stable state to the other after a critical point.Moreover,the snapping between the two stable states can be reversibly performed.
