With the deepening of globalization, many colleges and universities in China offer all kinds of courses related to English for Specific Purposes (ESP).Content-Based Instruction (CBI) originated from western countries has been applied in the teaching of ESP since 1990s.Among the three frequently mentioned teaching models based on the idea of CBI, theme-based language instruction (TBLI) is the basic one which is more easily conducted in Chinas colleges and universities.Based on the introduction of CBI and the teaching models, this paper attempts to analyze the application of theme-based language instruction in terms of syllabus design, requirements for learners and teachers, and testing and evaluation methods.By doing so, this paper draw the conclusion that TBLI will play an important role in the reformation of college English teaching in China.
