The Shark Bay Prawn Fishery and Shark Bay Scallop Fishery have some overlap of the fishing grounds that both fleets operate in.The Shark Bay prawn fleet has traditionally retained scallops (Amusium balloti) as by-product.The interrelationship between trawling activity for the two target species (prawns (shrimps) and scallops) has raised both management challenges and industry conflicts over time as each industry sector strongly believed that interactions arise in the form of the physical effect of each fisherys trawl gear on their respective fishery.Harvest level settings for each fishery (in the form of effort levels and the timing and/or location of fishing) are independently set on the basis of pre-recruitment surveys of each target species yet managing the two fisheries requires recognition of the activities of both fleets.
