The Pectinidae are represented by over 250 recognised species found worldwide, and some 50+ species across more than 28 genera have been represented in molecular phylogenies. The Australasian region is noted for high pectinid species diversity and endemism, and despite some 70-80 species in 24 genera being reportedly found in the region, less than ten species have been included in these previous phylogenies.
