This study presents a turfgrass management tractor that can mow turfgrass autonomously, applying granular fertilizer in variable rates based on turfgrass quality.A sub-compact utility mower tractor of 20 kW was equipped with a steering motor, an actuator for adjusting the position of food pedal, a RTK GPS, and a controller for autonomous driving.A NIR sensitive color camera and a variable-rate fertilizer applicator were also mounted on the tractor to estimate turfgrass quality and adjust the application rate of fertilizer. The NIR sensitive color images of turfgrass were analyzed to obtain several indices usually used in agronomic image segmentation and feature analysis methods.Based on the measurement of turfgrass quality, the granular fertilizer was applied in variable rates on-the-go, mowing turfgrass autonomously.
