Farm mechanization in Korea has been mainly concentrated on rice cultivation to solve the peak labor requirements and control the labor wages increment.Thus main operations of rice production such as land preparation, transplanting, chemical application and harvesting are almost fully mechanized.But mechanization of dry land crop cultivation is in its initial stage or many of the main dry land farm operations still are carried out by man power except land preparation and pest control.Land preparation, plastic film mulching and chemical spraying for dry land crop cultivation is fairly mechanized affected by rice farming mechanization, but for other operations such as seeding, seedling growing, transplanting, weed control and harvesting are conducted mainly by man power or in the beginning stage of mechanization.The mechanization rate for land preparation in bean, potato, Chinese cabbage, red pepper and cucumber cultivation is in the range of 96-100 %.Mechanization rate of seeding for above crops is in the range of 3-12%, that of the chemical spraying is 84-97% and 13-25 % for weed control depending on the crops.Numerous crops and complex working stage make it difficult to develop machinery for dry land crop cultivation.Recently various kinds of machines for dry land crop cultivation were developed but not distributed much to the rural area due to several reasons such as poor purchasing power of farmers.Standard cultivation pattern and integrated mechanization model for dry land crop farming were developed to promote the mechanization of dry land and greenhouse crops.
