Liquid multicomponent alloys such as those in the Fe-Cu-Si,Ni-Cu-Co-Si,Ni-Cu-Fe-Sn-Ge and Ni-Cu-Co-Fe-Sn-Ge systems have been processed in containerless state with electromagnetic levitation, acoustic levitation, glass fluxing or drop tube method.Substantial undercoolings are usually achieved by amounts up to 0.2TL.which results in the realization of rapid solidification even in the bulk form. The surface tension and specific heat of liquid alloys are measured in both the stable and metastable states during levitation processing, and the other relevant thermophysical properties are derived accordingly. The dendrite growth velocity within undercooled multicomponent alloys are also measured experimentally, which shed light on the research about both the solute trapping and the microstructural evolution induced by rapid solidification.Meanwhile, the growth morphology transition of ternary eutectics is investigated through extensive experiments. For ternary monotectic alloys, the Marangoni convection results in the formation of core-shell microstructure under free fall conditions.
