With regard to organ identity, the well-known ABC model is now treated as canonical.Considerable effort has been expended to demonstrate that the B-and C-functions are conserved throughout extant angiosperms.However, the A-function of specifying sepals and petals has become controversial because it is difficult to separate this function from the floral meristem function.Arabidopsis class A genes are known to play key roles in floral meristem determination, perianth specification, and fruit development, yet little is known about the function of these genes in monocots.In particular, it is not known which, if any, genes perform an A-function in rice.We used mutants and RNAi transgenic technique to functionally characterize all four members of the class A gene family in rice, including OsMADS14, OsMADS15, OsMADS18, and OsMADS20.
