An environment-friendly process for the recovery of high valued metals from spent lithium nickel cob

In this paper, an environment-friendly hydrometallurgical process has been proposed for the recovery of high valued metals (nickel and cobalt) from spent lithium-ion batteries.Firstly, Ni, Co, Mn and Li were leached by organic citric acid and glucose from the waste cathode material after dismantling and peeling off aluminum foil from spent Lithium-ion batteries.Leaching efficiencies as high as 97%,96%, 94% and 99% of Ni, Co, Mn and Li were achieved under the optimal experimental conditions of citric acid concentration of 1.5 mol·L-1, reaction time of 90 min, reaction temperature of 90 C, S/L of 20 g·L-1 and MSRL (glucose content) of 1.2.Then nickel and cobalt were selectively precipitated by dimethylglyoxime reagent and ammonium oxalate solution respectively.Under the optimum reaction conditions, over 98% of nickel and 95% of cobalt were separated and recovered as nickel dimethylglyoxime complex precipitate and cobalt oxalate hydrate precipitate respectively.The nickel dimethylglyoxime complex precipitate can be dissolved in 4 mol.L-1 hydrochloric acid solution and dimethylglyoxime could be regeneration and reused as precipitant.It is a relatively simple and environment-friendly route for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from spent lithium-ion batteries.
