Mercury pollution has caused significant impacts to human health and the ecosystem. It has been considered as one of the most important global environmental issues and given growing international attentions.China is a large country that produces, uses and discharges a great amount of mercury and mercury products.Mercury use and demand account for about 60%of the global amount and anthropogenic emission accounts for about 30%of the global total.Mercury pollution in china is large in quantity, widely spread and severe in certain areas, which poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. At the same time, the most pressing challenges regarding mercury pollution in China might be different from what is known from Europe and North America. There are for instance indications that elevated mercury concentrations in fish is less wide spread problem in China, and methylation of mercury in dams is less severe than in temperate and boreal regions.Uptake of mercury in rice grown at contaminated soils,on the other hand,is an emerging research field, where balanced information to the public and policy makers is in demand.Contamination from industrial processes of particular importance in China gives new challenges, for instance the use of mercury catalysts in industry.
