To investigate human Hg exposure by food consumption and occupation in compact fluorescent lamps(CFLs)manufacturing area, human hair and rice samples were collected from Gaohong town,China, where are commonly known as the “land of CFLs”.The mean values of total mercury(THg)and methylmercury(MeHg)concentration in local cultivated rice samples(THg: 12.9±7.14 ng?g-1 N=77; MeHg: 6.01±3.65 ng?g-1 N=52)were significantly higher(p<0.01)than imported rice samples(THg: 6.79±4.81 ng?g-1 N=72; MeHg: 3.39±2.97 ng?g-1 N=29),which indicated that CFLs manufacturing activities result in Hg pollution in local rice samples. For all of interviewee, significantly higher(p < 0.05)of THg contents in human hair were observed in CFLs workers when compared with other residents, but not for inorganic mercury(IHg)and MeHg.In comparison,MeHg concentration in human hair of resident who feed on local cultivated rice were significantly higher than resident who feed on imported rice. These results demonstrated that CFLs manufacturing activities result in THg accumulation in human hair. However,MeHg in human hair were mainly affected by the rice sources of resident.Probable daily intake(PDI)of MeHg through rice consumption for people who feed on local cultivated rice is 0.028±0.021 μg?kg-1?d-1,which was significantly higher(F=6.30,p < 0.05)than that for people who feed on imported rice(0.017 ± 0.017 μg?kg-1?d-1).In comparison, the average PDI of MeHg for people through fish consumption is only 0.008μg?kg-1?d-1.Overall,PDI of MeHg for local residents were lower than the guidelines for public health concerns.
