This paper demonstrated a flexible thin-film polymer waveguide. The direct pattering of flexible thin-film polymer optical waveguide using a liquid-state UV-curable polymer and substrate-contact exposure are proposed. In the method, a UV-curable polymer is spin coated on the flexible thin-film polymer substrate which is also considered as the lower cladding to achieve temperature insensitive. Then the liquid film is exposed through the back of the substrate by UV light through a photomask which is contact with the substrate. The process is followed by wet-etching of the unexposed region by organic solvent to form waveguide patterns. There is no baking process in this method and the process is easy, fast and low-cost.Flexible optical waveguides (4-12μ m width) were fabricated. The bend flexible polymer waveguide film was tested. The near-infrared field guided-mode pattern of the device was obtained. The insertion loss of the waveguide was tested to be 7.4dB in a 3cm-long waveguide. The flexible waveguide has two applications. One is to give different angle outputs; the other is to give the connection of multilayer. The new fabrication method gives the availability of photo-crosslinkable polymer in the waveguide application.
