This presentation first discusses the causes of slowing down of global warming in recent 10-15 years and then exemplifies important cases of extreme weather and climate events in China.Based on the above analysis, the following conclusions have been drawn:(1) Due to slowing down of global warming in recent 10-15years, China has undergone much colder winter and frequent heat waves, thus leading to extreme weather and climate condition.(2) Due to weakening of the Asian summer monsoon, the major monsoonal rain belt has experienced an inter-decadal southward shift, thus leading to the anomalous precipitation pattern of droughts in north and floods in south. In Northwest China there has been an increasing trend of precipitation for last 20 years due to increase of moisture transport from southem boundary.(3) The global climate change is characterized be: (1) The global warming and (2)changes in extreme events (intensity, area and frequency). The latter (e.g.heat wave, winter snowstorms and heavy rainfalls) manifests itself as more frequent and greater intensity.Three intense extreme events in China are exemplified to record-breaking characters with reduced return period of occurrence.
