As far back as late 1980s,Nanjing has become one of the cities with a rapidly aging population,the earliest one in China right after Shanghai,Beijing and Tianjin.This article discusses design measures for the outdoor environment in residential blocks suitable for the elderly,tables some proposals and ideas,through the investigation and analysis on the current condition of outdoor environment in 4 residential blocks in Nanjing as well as the utilization of the elderly.Through our joined observations,questionnaires,and investigation on the surroundings,the behaviors of the aged and status quo,we judge whether these facilities fit their aged users well.The questionnaire has multiple choice questions involving outdoor activities and their motivations,types,places and companies,and it also relates to health,psychological feelings and the assessment of the elderly.The analysis of the data focus mainly on four parts: motivations,categories,venues and company of the elderlys activities.We find problems related to the space for the elderlys outdoor activities within community on the follow major aspects,through cross analysis of questionnaire and ground inspection.Lack of accessibility design,unreasonable design of activity space,lack of humanized design in rest facilities and poor health and safety environment in activity space.Based on the above analysis,the article purposes several suggestions for community design suitable for the elderly from two aspects,section division and facility design.For the key points in activity space design suitable for the elderly,we think the activity space for the elderly in the community could be divided into three types according to the categories of the elderlys activities and preferences,namely core activity area,strolling path and small meeting place.The three types of space are complementary to one another,and meet the requirements of the elderlys different kinds of activities and psychological needs.The suggestion for facility design suitable for the elderly mainly on three parts: ground decoration,lounge seats,green decoration and water landscape.
