Introduction:The purpose of this paper is to identify the differences of active/inactive lifestyle (Lifestyle Type) in the community dwelling elderly in Japan. The relationship between physical activity and health is well-known.However,few people have implemented enough amount of physical activity.Traditional approaches to promote the enough amount of physical activity or exercise are not effective for community-dwelling elderly.Recently, daily living activity has received a lot of attention. But little is known about the effect of daily living activity such as housework.Few researches have been targeted at Japanese.Foreign-based study may not necessarily adapt to the unique lifestyle of Japanese. Therefore,it is significant to focus on Japanese. Methods: The present data were derived from a survey of diary of time spent in daily life and measurement of energy expenditure. The participants were asked to keep a diary of time spent in daily life for 24 hours. The diaries were complemented with a personal interview 24 hours later. The data collected were coded by an activity-coding list.Energy expenditure per minute during daily living were collected with a triaxial accelerometer.Participants were 32 people (21 males and 11 females),aged 67 to 88 years old.Physical characteristics, physical strength, and ADL were also determined.By using categorized energy expenditure rate (excluded sleeping time),and using principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering, the lifestyle types were identified. Results: Four lifestyle types were categorized by categorized energy expenditure rate. They were defined as Sport type,TV type,Housework type and Hobby type. The mean of anthropometry, physical strength,ADL,and living environment were not significantly different across the type of lifestyle. Conclusions: In our study, the daily life was categorized and quantitatively captured with energy expenditure.Analysis of these data revealed the following: (1) Four daily lifestyle types were categorized by categorized energy expenditure rate.We defined them as Sport type,TV type,Housework type and Hobby type (2) The mean of anthropometry, physical strength,ADL and living environment were not significantly different across the lifestyle types (3) Sport type significantly spent more moderate intensity activity than TV type.Eventually, lifestyle type of community-dwelling elderly was clearly categorized, and suggested the need of health care approach according to each type of lifestyle. In addition, housework was considered to be a possible factor to increase daily total amount of energy expenditure physical activity.
