Formation of new synapses, or synaptogenesis, is critical for neuronal circuit formation in the brain.Neurexin-neuroligin interaction has been reported to induce the formation of excitatory synapses. However these newly formed synapses are initially immature and lack AMPA receptors. The underlying mechanism by which AMPA receptors are recruited after new synapses are established by neurexin and neuroligin was not clear. This recruitment process could represent a fundamental step in the assembly of functional neuronal networks after synapse formation. Our work found that PICK1 (protein interacting with C kinase 1) can recruit AMPA receptors to the newly formed synapses.
