It is well known that pain of visceral origin often is referred to overlying somatic structures where cutaneous and/or muscular hypersensitivity (allodynia and/or hyperalgesia) occurs. This phenomenon has been termed viscerosomatic referred pain. The underlying mechanism usually is explained as the result of the peripheral dichotomizing afferents and the viscerosomatic convergent input onto sensory transmission pathways in spinal dorsal horn as well as supraspinal sites. An increasing number of clinical reports indicate that visceral pain not only involves a diseased visceral organ, but also facilitates the sensory function of a normal visceral structure.
