Ink-jet printing technology has been attractive due to its capability of direct and fine printing onto various substrates.Recent studies have been focused on the expansion of the ink-jet printing application from the purpose of general consumer use and design companies to prototype production of precision parts and parts manufacturing. The use of ink-jet printing technology with ceramic pigment which is a highly stable coloring agent to decorate porcelain products, glass, plastics also has many advantages such as high resolution, eco-friendly and consumer on demand manufacturing. In addition, there is no direct contact point between the printer and the substrates to be printed, thus the printing process is fast and can be adaptable to various kinds of objects. For the application of ink-jet printing technology to ceramic product decoration, the ink containing highly dispersed inorganic nano-pigments is required. The properties of inorganic pigments and solvents of ceramic ink should be precisely optimized to achieve a good jetting property. In this study, the printability and droplet formation behavior of ceramic inks were demonstrated for digital decoration of ceramic tiles.Ceramic inks were formulated using organic and aqueous solvent.Inorganic nano-pigments in the ceramic inks showed a good thermal and glaze stability for application to porcelain product manufacturing process. The viscosity and surface tension of ceramic inks were controlled with proper additives and dispersion agent for a suitable jetting. The correlation between these various synthetic conditions and droplet formation behavior of ceramic ink were investigated.
