This study examines to what extent adult L2 learners and L1 speakers of Chinese think differently when producing the Chinese ba construction (BC) in oral narration.Twenty-two adult native (L1) and 110 second language (L2) speakers of Chinese participated in two oral tasks and two interviews.Results showed significant differences between L1 and L2 speakers in their use of BC and their expressional foci when using BC.The findings have a number of implications for teaching BC in L2 classrooms.
