A metamaterial is a type of composite material usually built as a periodic array of unit cells. This periodicity, rather than the properties of the materials comprising the unit cells,is responsible for the surprising behavior of metamaterials that are not seen in natural materials, such as a negative refractive index in the case of electromagnetic waves.Since Liu et al.[1]proposed a locally resonant sonic material, metamaterials for acoustic waves, called acoustic metamaterials, have been investigated to explore their unusual acoustic properties that arise from local resonances induced in the unit cells.Negative effective material properties are representative acoustic properties of an acoustic metamaterial, such as negative bulk modulus and mass density, but there are others.
