Factors associated with delay in the diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma

Background and objective: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Bangladesh and worldwide.Early diagnosis of this disease has been shown to improve both survival and decrease morbidity.Unfortunately, a significant number of patients are still at a late stage of disease.The purpose of this study was to identify factors which may be associated with diagnostic delay in oral squamous cell carcinoma.Study design: A cross sectional study.Study setting andperiod: From April 2009 to July 2010Participants: Total number 53 histologically diagnosed oral squamous cell carcinoma in advanced stage were selected for the study Methods: The data were collected from Dept.of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dhaka Dental College and Hospital,and Dept.of ENT, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.A self-designed questionnaire is developed to collect data during interview.The following variables were analyzed age, gender, employment status, education, area of residence,initial symptom, visibility of tumor, initial selection of profession, and cost of transportation from home to local hospital, cost of transportation from home to tertiary hospital.Patient delay, professional delay and total (diagnostic)delay were calculated using statistical software the SPSS system for windows, version 16.0.For categorical independent variables mean compare independent two tailed "t" test and one way ANOVA (ANOVA) test was performed.In case of independent continuous variable linear regression and co-relation test was done.
