  Early-life exposure to SSRI antidepressants increases the chances of developing mood disorders later in life.However,the biological basis in term of neuronal morphology for these behavioral changes is unknown.Here,we have employed animal models,mimicking maternal use of SSRIs in clinical,to study neonatal exposure to SSRIs on neuronal morphology.We used confocal microscopy to investigate the acute and long-lasting effects of SSRI administration during early life on dendritic spine density in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons.We observed an acute decrease,and a delayed increase,in dendritic spine density of CA1 pyramidal neurons.These detrimental changes in neuronal morphology were associated with decreased locomotor activity.Thus,our findings demonstrate that neonatal exposure to SSRIs is capable of influencing the morphological plasticity of excitatory synapses and raise the caution of clinical medication with SSRIs especially in pregnant women.
