The estrogen receptor (ERα) status of breast tumors is arguably the most important biomarker in oncology and used clinically to identify patients most likely to benefit from endocrine therapies.However, there is a need for more precise biomarkers of treatment response.ERα activity is regulated by phosphorylation at several sites.As well in vitro models,ligand independent activation of ERαand resistance to tamoxifen can occur in part due to ERα phosphorylation?by kinases activated by over-expressed growth factor receptors such as HER2 or IGFR.However, little is known of the relevance in vivo of phosphorylated forms of ERα in breast cancer.We have determined the relationship of p-ERα expression in breast cancers with established histopathologieal parameters and clinical outcome.Previously we have validated antibodies detecting ERα phosphorylated at serine 118 (p-S 118), for immunohistochemistry of breast cancer biopsies.
