Architects and structural engineers have to co-exist.One must appreciate the other. Now other services like electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, vertical transportation etc.have also become extremely relevant. The synthesis between Architecture and Structural engineering is a must in all the projects especially sustainable structures. The various shell structures, which are environmental friendly, designed by the author and his firm portray this compatibility.Thin concrete shells consume the least amount of materials both cement and steel.Specially, important point is minimum consumption of cement.Cement production is most polluting.Every tonne of cement produces one tonne of CO2.Thus Shells which consume minimum amount of cement care environmental friendly.Thin shells are probably the best morphological structures to express this range through their inherent plasticity of form which lends them to diverse expressions.Thin shells come in an immense variety of structural forms. This paper highlights the authors experience in using shell structures in various forms and shapes duly considering the environmental aspects on sustainability. This paper will examine the works already done by the author in India.
