Low density aerogel composites for thermal insulation can be widely applied in advanced missiles, aerospace vehicles and military fields because of their lightweight and thermal insulation performances which are equal to the traditional insulation materials.Pneumatic pressure is the main load of the thermal protection system (TPS)[1] in aerospace fields, so obtaining the compression property of the load-bearing material is essential to the system.Fiber reinforced aerogel composites perform excellent thermal and mechanical properties, which can be a candidate of thermal protection materials. However, there are few researches on mechanical properties of aerogel composites under alternate loading.Experiments were undertaken to investigate the evolution of structure and properties of aerogel composites under alternate loading, the evolution of fiber bulk density, mechanical properties of fiber reinforced silica, alumina and carbon aerogel composites under alternate loading at room temperature and high temperature were observed, respectively. As to the carbon aerogel composites, more compression times make compression strain of aerogel composites promote from 3.63% to 7.15% (figure 1) under repeated loads at ambient temperature.Subsequently the compressive deformation recovered to 98.27% after removing load. This result indicates that aerogel composites perform excellent compression resistance, which might be a great application in the aerospace fields of TPS.
