Preparation and characterization of alumina matrix though a sol-gel process

  The sol-gel method is one of the most important techniques for preparing high quality powders since it provides a high-purity, low temperature synthesis and especially a precise composition control.A commercial Boehmite was used as precursor of alpha-alumina particles which were prepared by a sol-gel procedure.Thermal gravimetric (TG) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis revealed the transformation process of alumina dry gel.With heat-treatment up to 1400 ℃, structural evolution of dry gel was carried out by combination of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance with magic angle spinning (27Al MAS NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis.The results showed the most thermodynamically stable phase, α-Al2O3 occurred dominantly at 1200 ℃, which can be obtained through a sequence of topotactic and reconstructive transformations: Boehmite → γ → θ → α.The alumina powders prepared with so-gel method which improving the purity, fine grain size of alumina, may increase the mechanical properties of alumina-based composites.
