The "gold standard" methods for studying the human sympathetic nervous system are sympathetic nerve recording with microneurography and isotope dilution-derived measurement of noradrenaline release to plasma (noradrenaline spillover). In an analysis of neural mechanisms of postural syncope, I have additionally studied sympathetic nerve proteins in biopsies of subcutaneous veins in autonomic insufficiency patients.Subcutaneous human veins have a dense sympathetic innervation.

The purpose of this presentation is to review the investigations since 2001 carried out in my laboratory employing a new, non-invasive technology called Whole Body Periodic Acceleration (WBPA or pGz)
