The influence of specimen orientation on the mechanical properties, including the tensile, compression and fatigue properties of rolled magnesium alloy AZ31 at room temperature was investigated in this study.Sheet samples with two different orientations, i.e.rolling direction (RD) and transverse direction (TD), were prepared and tested using an MTS servohydraulic machine test system. It was found that the rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy shows strong anisotropic properties in RD and TD.Both the yield strength and elongation of the TD samples are higher than the RD samples.Tensile fracture mode of RD and TD specimen is found to be different. The RD samples show shearing while the TD samples show necking. The ratio of compression/tension of the RD sample is greater than that of the TD sample, indicating the that deformation twinning is easily activated in the RD sample.By evaluating the fatigue parameters in the Manson-Coffin and Basquins equations, it is found that the TD sample has a better fatigue performance as compared to the RD sample in both stress-controlled and strain-controlled cyclic loading conditions.
