Glass is a transparent, heat resistant and chemically durable material, which is adopted in a variety of applications. For pharmaceutical applications such as vials, ampoules and syringes, glass contacts with various medicines,so high chemical durability is needed to prevent reaction with medicines.Borosilicate glass, especially called as neutral glass,is a typical material for pharmaceutical applications.First neutral glass was developed in 1910,in which glass composition was optimized to get high chemical durability.Although composition of neutral glass almost unchanged for a long period of time, progress in medical science developed new medicines such as protein formulations which would severely react with glass. As a result, glass flakes due to chemical reactions between glass and medicines were sometimes observed, especially for long-term storage. This phenomenon is called delamination, which leads to product recalls. Therefore, mechanism of delamination has been extensively studied in recent years.High hydrolytic resistance would be also needed as new medicines are developed. In this lecture, history and fundamentals of glass for pharmaceutical applications will be introduced.Recent investigations on delammation and chemical durability improvement of glass will be also introduced.
