What is reality, and how do we get there? We know sensory perception comes from neuronal coding of sensory inputs. The latter is vulnerable to life-long development and plasticity. Therefore, the reality we perceived is ever-changing and incomplete, which is also true for pain. The gate-control theory was among the first to suggest this possibility of partial-reality nature of pain. Our studies suggest that pain perception was coded by neuronal ensembles in the matrix,a process which include large amount of descending and inter-network modulation. The involved psychological process may include attention, anticipation, emotion, and corollary discharge.Behind these seemingly complicated phenomena there might underlay the change of the pain concept itself. This is a paraphrase of altered pain reality. Our experimental study revealed that change of pain concept alters pain perception and pain behavior, indicating the alteration of pain reality per se.future study may extend to inter-human interaction,as well as to subjective modulation of pain reality.
