Background.Chronicpain patients often show deficits in cognitive functions such as attention and working memory. We assumed that auditory sensory memory, indexed by mismatch negativity(MMN),using varyinginterstimulus intervals(ISI)oddball paradigm, would be altered in chronic pain patients.Method.In experiment 1,we compared ERPs in chronic pain patients(n=18)and elderly control subjects(n=20)during a frequent-deviant auditory oddball paradigm as a function of short(500ms),medium(1500ms)and long(2500ms)intervals between stimuli. The mismatch negativity(MMN)was obtained by subtracting responses to standard tones from responses to deviant tones. And we also compared MMN obtained from another younger control subjects(n=16)and the elderly control subjects using same experimental procedure in experiment 2.Results.In experiment 1,MMN mean amplitudes were attenuated in chronic pain patients in the long ISI condition, compared with elderly controls. And with the ISI increasing, the MMN amplitudes were decreasing, this kind of decline was more rapidly in chronic pain patients than elderly controls. In experiment 2,the younger control subjects showed higher MMN amplitudes than elderly controls in the middle and long stimuli intervals condition.Conclusions.Our results suggested that pre-attentive auditory sensory memory processing is impaired in chronic pain patients. And these data might be a useful reference point for the assessment of auditory sensory memory in pain.
