Mass and heat transfer are often the rate limiting steps in chemical processes.Most process flows are turbulent since mixing at turbulent conditions is very effective.However, the viscous layer close to the walls limits the mass and heat transfer rates.Introducing porous walls has been shown to increase the heat transfer rate.Most benefit of the porous walls is obtained for high Pr/Sc numbers i.e.for mass transfer in liquids.Order of magnitude increase in mass transfer rate can be obtained by selecting a porous material with the right permeability and porosity properties.
